Whew! What a writing day

Well, yesterday I spent the better part of the day revising my first two blocks for Spells. Lot's of work. I hated doing it. There were some elements that I had used in the old beginning that I really liked. I thought they were cool, but they didn't work for what this book has morphed into at the moment.

The opening had me stumped from the very beginning. How to introduce the two main characters. I had to change it because it wasn't believable enough. Yeah, so we all know it's going to be a paranormal just from the title but what I had come up with was so far fetched that even I didn't believe the lie. It was too up front and in your face and really I wouldn't have wanted to read it. Too many things were answered up front. One thing I've recently learned is to keep as much from the reader and make them wait for it as possible. It creates tension and that overwhelming urge to turn the page, and the old..."I just can't put this book down yet."

I'm hoping that what I've created is more logicial but still weird enough to grab a person's interest. You learn a lot about the lead in this opening by what she goes through and her thought process and what flashes in her mind. (sounds weird but you'd have to read it.)

So anyway...my writing for the day was to write a rough draft of a happening and it came to about 1800 words. Good words I hope. I'm still too close to it to be a good judge yet but I'm happy enough with it at this point that I can file it away and go onto the next section.

Finally, I'm back on track and I think I'll be able to salvage some of what I've already written. I hope so!

Happy Fourth of July everyone!!!
