The Subtly of words...

Cup them in your hands like a pool of water then slowly spread your fingers and release them. It is not the rush of forcefully streaming water that comes out of a faucet in which I speak. It is the soft tinkling sound of smooth water. Water that runs over a quiet brook, never stopping but flowing endlessly back to its source.

That should be the goal when you write. Words are a writer's palette. Rich, distinct, and mixed with just the right shade of dark or light to enhance your meaning or darken it.

Soft, simple words that roll off the tongue or melt in your mouth like a dark chocolate. Words can invoke taste, smell, memory and thought. There is power in that. Words "mean" something.

When we as writers understand the subtly of words we can use them like the fine tools of a master craftsman. Chiseling away to bring forth the image in our minds.

That is talent, and understanding it means mastering your craft.
